Woman Sues Palo Alto Hospital After Suffering Paralysis While Being Treated for Migraines

In 2012, a Menlo Park woman was awarded a $22 million verdict against the Palo Alto Medical Association and Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto after a visit to be treated for migraine headaches resulted in paralysis. The verdict was one of the largest in Santa Clara County history. The paralysis occurred after doctors administered a cerebral angiogram, a procedure in which dye is injected into the veins in an attempt to treat the headaches. The lawsuit alleged that the patient was never informed of the risks of the procedure and that the procedure was not medically necessary for treating her condition.

Stanford Hospital Sued for Wrongful Death After Fatal Complications From Routine Procedure

In 2007, a 70-year-old woman came into Stanford Hospital Medical Center in Palo Alto for knee replacement surgery, a routine procedure with a high success rate. Following the surgery, the woman developed severe abdominal pain and asked to see the doctor. According to the lawsuit, she was not examined by the doctor until the next morning, at which point she went into shock and died in intensive care. The lawsuit also alleged that the hospital deleted portions of the patient’s file after her death in an attempt to cover up their mistakes.

Hospital malpractice can occur even at the top medical facilities in California. Overcrowding and understaffing often lead to needless delays, misdiagnoses, early dismissals, and other issues. Hospital lawsuits can be challenging, however, because you need to be able to prove negligence even when the hospital, doctors, and other staff are uncooperative. If you or someone close to you has suffered harm at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto or any other San Francisco Bay Area hospital, contact our office today at 408-289-1417 for a personalized consultation.
